TOOTH SENSITIVITY

tooth sensitivitySensitivity of tooth, experienced by many people, may be caused by various reasons. Regardless of the reason, deterioration of enamel, which is at the outer layer of teeth and even harder than diamond, causes sensitivity in teeth. Below the enamel layer, there is dentin layer made of tiny pipes, and below that, there is dental pulp including plexus. When enamel is damaged, dentin layer below is left unprotected, and pulp begins to sense everything.

When enamel is damaged;

Dental decays that occur as a result of invasion of teeth by bacteria in the mouth, deteriorating enamel pattern, and causing the dentin layer below to appear. This causes sensitivity against cold and hot.

Cracks in enamel and abrasions in scapes, seen as a result of a trauma or teeth grinding, cause sensitivity of teeth.

Reflux patients develop sensitivity as a result of resorption in thinner parts of enamel, as stomach acid flows towards the mouth.

tooth sensitivityOverconsumption of acidic beverages (such as cola) or foods cause loss or decline of enamel, resulting in sensitivity. People with the habit of eating lemon cause lemon acid to have negative effect on enamel.

Incorrect tooth brushing; especially horizontal and harsh brushing people may have abrasions in scape. As whitening is currently popular, tooth pastes contain excessive whiteners. Brushing teeth for a long time with such pastes may cause sensitivity.

Density of gum affects attitude of gum towards traumas. For people with thin gum or where gum is less dense, gum recedes easily and causes sensitivity in root tissue of teeth that comes out.

To relieve the sensitivity of tooth, medium or soft tooth brushes and desensitizing toothpastes of your preference may be used. In addition, dental floss or interface brushes or mouth wash products would ensure a better mouth care. Reducing consumption of acidic or sour food and beverages and using fluoride tooth care products would also help reducing sensitivity.

If sensitivity continues despite all, you need to be examined by your dentist. Your dentist would spot the sensitivity zones and administer the necessary treatment. To remove sensitivity, cleaning of tooth surface, filling eroded zones, fluorine applications, night plate or botox in case of bruxism are the options.
